How to Play Crossword Puzzles
What Is a Crossword Puzzle?
A crossword puzzle is a word game played on a grid of white and black squares. Your goal is to fill the white squares with letters, forming words that read both across (left-to-right) and down (top-to-bottom). Each answer is guided by a numbered clue, and the intersecting letters between across and down words help you confirm your answers.
Crosswords have been a beloved pastime since the early 1900s. They exercise your vocabulary, general knowledge, and pattern recognition — and there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of completing a tricky grid.
How to Read the Grid
The grid is made up of white squares and black squares. Black squares separate the words and create the puzzle's structure. Some white squares have small numbers in the corner — these correspond to clue numbers.
- Numbered squares mark the start of an across answer, a down answer, or both.
- Across answers read left to right from the numbered square.
- Down answers read top to bottom from the numbered square.
- Intersections are squares shared by both an across and a down answer. Getting one answer right gives you letters for the other.
Types of Clues
Crossword clues come in several styles. Recognizing the type of clue helps you know what kind of answer to look for:
- Straight definitions — The clue directly defines the answer. Example: "Capital of France" = PARIS.
- Fill-in-the-blank — Part of a phrase with a missing word. Example: "The cat in the ___" = HAT.
- Abbreviations — If the clue uses an abbreviation (like "Dr." or "approx."), the answer is often abbreviated too.
- Wordplay and puns — Some clues use double meanings or playful language to lead you to the answer.
- Theme clues — Many puzzles have a theme. Once you spot the pattern, themed clues become easier.
Getting Started: Step by Step
- Scan the clues first. Read through the across and down clues quickly. Some answers will come to you immediately — fill those in first.
- Start with fill-in-the-blank clues. These tend to be the most straightforward and give you anchor letters for other words.
- Use crossing letters. Every letter you place helps with intersecting words. If you know three letters of a five-letter word, the answer often becomes clear.
- Work in sections. Focus on one area of the grid at a time rather than jumping around randomly.
- Don't be afraid to guess. If you have a strong hunch, write it in. You can always change it later if it doesn't work with the crossing words.
Tips for Beginners
- Plurals often end in S. If you suspect an answer is plural, try placing an S at the end of the word.
- Past tense often ends in ED. Clues in the past tense usually have past tense answers.
- Clue tense matches answer tense. A present-tense clue gives a present-tense answer; a past-tense clue gives a past-tense answer.
- Short words recur. Common 3- and 4-letter crossword answers include ERA, ORE, ALE, ARIA, ALOE, and OLEO. You'll start recognizing them over time.
- Question marks signal wordplay. A clue ending in "?" usually involves a pun or non-literal interpretation.
